What is our teachers doing?

Recently, there was a case of a female high school student, appearing in school with a black sports brasserie. Under her school uniform, of course.

This is not allowed, under Singapore's school dresscodes. The student has no doubt flouted the rules here, reason unknown. Exhibitionism, taunting other students, boyfriend's gift, forgot to change to the right color for school? We do not know the real reason for her actions.

What caught my eye was the way the teacher handled the situation. She ordered the poor girl to remove her black bra, confiscating it, then promptly sent her packing for home!

She was deemed to have disgraced herself for flouting the rules, for dressing inappropriately. But by sending her home, braless, the teacher has aggravated the matter beyond it's restricted perimeters. The school is disgraced, the girl is further diagraced, not to mention utterly humiliated. Picture this, a school girl, on a public transport, during school hours, with no bra.
It does not make a pretty sight indeed.

The entire episode has turned the focus onto the educator's actions. Is it too irrelevant and harsh? What better way is there to handle the situation? Shouldn't the educator phone the parents or guardian, to have them bring a proper pair of undergarments for the girl to change? What other avenues have the educator explored, before deciding that the poor girl is to be sent home in shame, with no bra.

This is another form of sexual abuse, if you ask me, a case of outraging of modesty. Or perhaps the educator was provoked by the girl. Perhaps she was taunted and challenged by her charge. Regardless of the cause and effect, the poor Principal of the school will have lots to answer. To the student, to the parents, to the public, and everyone will be waiting to see what will happen to the educator, the discipline enforcer.

Such is Singapore, we are a small country, with no big stories to tell. This, is big news to us.
